  • Hi:

I have the latest version of Outpost, 6.0.2175 and I cannot open Windows "Help and Support" in XP. I have had other problems attributed to Outpost so although I am not sure Outpost is causing this problem my guess is that it is. H and S was working a while back. Can someone please see if it works for you.

Also, I am considering going back to 4.0. Can I uninstall 6.0 and then install 4 again with no problems or will I need to completely clean the registry of 6.0 before installing 4 again. How would you recommend I clean the registry and all parts of 6.0 if that is what I need to do. Thanks, Kent

  • I'm glad you go it working.

Reinstalling H&S was going to be my next suggestion. I guess it should have been the first one.

I hope it keeps working for you.

  • then does it take a reboot?

  • This line: cd /d %windir%pchealthhelpctr
is changing to the folder (cd is change directory) where the helpctr is located most likely for you it's: C:WINDOWSpchealthhelpctr.

If you actually have that folder then you typed the command wrong. You could try just copy and paste from post 9.

    It should look like this:

  • Hi:

I wanted to let you know I solved the H and S problem using the following reinstall instructions. Thanks again for your ideas. Kent

Step II - Reinstall Help and Support

    * Click Start, click Run and type CMD, and click OK.
    * In Command Prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each line: (Alternately, create a Batch file and run.)

    net stop helpsvc
    cd /d %windir%pchealthhelpctr
    rd packagestore /s /q
    rd installedskus /s /q
    cd binaries
    start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install
    start /w helpsvc /register

Note: The “start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install" command line reinstalls Help and Support, which may take several minutes.

  • Yeah I know what cd means. I started with DOS in 1979
Here is a copy of the error message when I put the 2nd line in the Run Command
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • I believe you can simply uninstall 6x and reinstall 4x. There haven't been complaints about this before but there was one or two that had problems uninstalling 6x for whatever reason on Vista.

Help and Support Center opens just fine for me. I can give you a screenie if you'd like.

Edit: Hope that's what you are referring to as I don't know of any either. I'm not sure what part of outpost that could be conflicting with this popping up as I don't think I have any exceptions listed for it under host protection though I do have allow on network enabled application launch among others.

  • Don't use a batch file Chris. Type in each command individually and what until it's done before doing the next. And make sure the service and all its dependency aren't disabled too.

  • Good for you. I haven't had H&S for a couple years now. Tried the batch file unsucessfully.
    Google has become my H&S.
    (along with some of you:))

  • I know that.
After typing in all the commands, does it require a reboot?

  • Nope.

Click Start, click Run and type CMD, and click OK. That will get you the command prompt.

  • Manny and Wayne:

Thanks for your help. I have looked at what you both suggested and still H and S does not work. It is a real puzzle for me. I don't think it is Outpost because I uninstalled OP and still it does not work. I have gone back a few images and a couple of weeks ago H and S is working but I can't find what it is that prevents it from loading now. If I click on it, I can see the process Helpctr.exe start up but there is no window, no error message and then the process stops. On computers where H and S does work I noticed that the processes helphost.exe and helpsvc.exe also load. They don't load on mine.

    Thanks, Kent

  • Couldn't do it other than the first line.
For second it said couldn't find cd
    then couldn't find rd etc.
Like I said google is my help.

  • thanks

  • H&S also requires the RPC (remote procedure call) service be running in order to work. under network rules i also have an entry for helpctr.exe/helpsvc.exe which uses the improvenet auto created rules for http and dns lookups. they also have entries in the anti-leak exceptions to allow them to work.

  • Thanks for your help in this thread and my other thread, Manny. The H and S service is started. It was set to automatic but I tried manual and it still doesn't work. Will keep looking. Thanks again, Kent

  • The commands have to be entered at the command prompt, NOT each in the Run dialog. Read the above post again. The first thing is to get to a command prompt.

  • There's lots of reasons, unfortunately, why H&S doesn't work.

Try this for a corrupted registry key: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888018/en-us

and maybe this stretch with DEP an incompatible runtime version and an AMD processor: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873158/en-us

  • No it should start working after all the components have been registered but a reboot never hurts.

  • The v6 uninstaller seems to do a good job. You should be able to uninstall v6 and install v4 without going through cleaning the registry.

On H&S make sure that the Help and Support service is started. It should be set to Manual at least in the console.

  • Thanks for your help in this thread too, PlacidBlueAlien. If Help and Support works for you, I guess it could be something else then that is causing problems. I will keep looking. Kent
